The Emotions Leading Up to an Ironman

Following is a burst of writing 10 days before Ironman Wisconsin, that I never published.  I wonder if any of you can identify with these emotions?  The kids in Kona?

How Do I Really Feel 10 Days Before IMWI?   (Originally written August 29, 2013)

I’m pissed.  That’s how I feel.  I’m anxious, paranoid, impatient, angry, unsettled.

I just want to be out of this office right now.

I want to be swimming, biking, or running.  I want to be cleaning my bike, packing my clothes, driving north.

I want people to stop being stupid.  I want to punch something, or someone.

It’s 10 Days out and the world feels like it will explode.

As I type, I feel a good angst.  Like I am ready to crush it.  Not scared.  I want to roll it out and let it ride.  I feel strong and ready to burst.

Why I Don't Watch the NFL

I used to love the NFL.  I was an improbable (and scorned) Vikings’ fan growing up in Wisconsin.

My best friend had just moved in from Minnesota and we spent hours upon hours running around in the backyard impersonating Fran Tarkington and the Purple People Eaters.  We were purple, man.  And maybe that’s why I love Prince so much, too.

I had all the gear.  The jersey, helmet, blanket, slippers, you name it, and I could not wait until Sunday.  It was easier for me to like the Vikings because they were good.  Back then the Packers stunk.

But, as good as they were, the Vikings lost sometimes.  It would crush me.  I would be so bummed I’d sit in my room the rest of the day.  It was bad.  And, you may know, the Vikings have lost FIVE Super Bowls.  I wouldn’t come out for days after those losses.

Eventually, I realized this was not a healthy practice and started questioning why I would care so much about an NFL team.  It didn’t make sense really.  I didn’t know any of the players, they didn’t call Minnesota (or Wisconsin for that matter) home, and they all made tons of money to play a game I played all weekend for free.

As I got older, I watched how other grown men acted watching their team.  They were just so vested in the games, and a loss seemed to literally take a piece of their souls.  I’ve even heard the mood in our nation’s capitol, the home to leaders of the free world, is dramatically affected by a Redskin’s win or loss.  People obviously care about their teams!

I still like college sports, but have to admit even that is waning.  Triathlon has had a direct impact on what I find important, and I’ve decided wasting my entire weekend celebrating corpse pose and watching football isn’t one of those things.  I still care about the Badgers, but the fact that they already have two losses has far less bearing on my mood.

Essentially it’s the difference between a passive and active life.

I haven’t always led by example, but truly believe the purpose in life is to learn and grow.  Without a goal or passion driving that process it’s easy to get caught in the trap of fading away; and for me that means living with guilt.

Today, I was flipping through the radio on my way home and landed on a sports talk station.  Some guy called in and was asking a question about the Titans, but he prefaced it by saying how depressed he gets when they lose.  “I stumble around the house for three or four days all bummed out.”  The hosts, and even he, started laughing, but I thought it was sad.  The Titans should have nothing to do with him, but the outcome of their games dictates how he feels.

So instead of watching football this Sunday, I will be swimming, biking, and running for 70.3 miles, and it will likely hurt.  But I will be alive.  I will be surrounded by people who would rather push their limits and “feel” life instead of sitting on a couch getting numb.

That said, I will likely spend a good chunk of Saturday in front of the computer watching the Ironman Kona World Championships, but I’m pretty sure that will have a different impact on my attitude.

Seduced By Goosepond

Ahh, Goosepond.  She had me at hello. IMG_0213-XL

The peaceful waters of Lake Guntersville, the serene terrain of Sequatchie Valley, and the friendly folk of Scottsboro, Alabama.  A recipe for love.

This wasn’t my plan.  In fact, two weeks ago I broke it off with the Rev3 Olympic in Anderson, SC because I’ve been a little fatigued since Ironman Wisconsin.  Then, last week, I reluctantly agreed to do the bike portion of the Goosepond relay.  Then yesterday’s events turned that plan upside down.

Robbie was gonna do the swim leg of the relay, but as “luck” would have it, he’s now signed up for a Ten Mile Swim the day before our Half.  I’m assuming he will be a bit tired on Sunday and since I am not one to take challenges lying down, I decided I would relieve him of the 1.2 mile swim and do Goosepond by myself.  IMG_0142-XL

All of this takes me back to the beginning of my running.  I always put something on the radar to keep me engaged and this has ignited a much needed fire.

The Wisconsin glow lasted about two weeks before I started half-assing a workout here and there.  It wasn’t the same.  I couldn’t focus without a defined target.  Now I have one, but feel severely under-trained.

It would be logical to treat this race like a fun adventure, but that’s not really in my DNA.   I ran 10 miles on Sunday and I’m still sore, so I’m thinking rest may be the best preparation for my second 1/2 triathlon.

It’s another one-day-stand, and as we all know anything is possible.  But can I beat my Muncie 70.3 time of 5:16?  My only option is to get lost in first date magic and let Goosepond’s powers of seduction work their magic.

My Private Predictions for Ironman Wisconsin #IMWI

This is a blog I wrote about a month away from Ironman Wisconsin, but never posted because I thought it might jinx me.  I also thought it was outlandish, especially because I had covert designs on being a long-shot for a slot at Kona (10:37 was the magic number in my age group).  As it turned out, Kona was silly talk, but considering I finished in 11:58, I don’t feel as bad about actually “saying” this stuff and never beat myself up for aiming high.  Following are my unedited predictions and actual times at Wisconsin.

SWIM PREDICTION FOR IMWI

I swam Muncie 70.3 in 37 minutes and felt like I took awful lines.  Hopefully it won’t be so confusing at Wisconsin (it was and more).  I think the Muncie set-up was nice and anxiety free because everyone was so spread out, but Wisconsin should offer more swimmer-ahead-of-me sighting and less chance that I will get way off course.  I also hope to get caught up in the man-made-current.

37 minutes at Muncie and I felt good at the end.  I believe I can be a little under double that, especially since I have swam a lot more since then and feel like my swimming is much stronger now.

Swim Prediction: 1:10   (Actual IMWI swim time 1:20)

BIKE PREDICTION FOR IMW

I know the bike will be tough, but I feel like I am going to rise to the occasion.  I’ve done 110 on Natchez trace in the rain in under 6 hours.  I really feel like 95 miles in isolation on the Trace will be about the equivalent of Wisconsin.  Add the crowd, etc and I’m thinking I can have a pretty good bike split.  My ass is more prepared and as long as the conditions are right, I’ll be ready to attack with wisdom and not go over my limits.

Bike Prediction: 5:45  (Actual IMWI bike time 6:03)

RUN PREDICTION FOR IMWI

At Muncie 70.3 I really did feel pretty strong on the run.  First and second half paces of the run were 8:12 and 8:35, but thought I could negative split if it weren’t for the burning feet.  If my feet hold up, I really think I can fight through the rest of the pain and run a decent marathon.  I could be completely fucked up on this thought, but I think on a perfect day I can hold a 9 minute pace.  I think 10 is probably more reasonable, but also know that anything can happen out there.  I’m gonna side in the middle of that and go with a 9:30 pace.

Run: 4:09 damn…  we’ll see… I’d sure like to get that below 4.   (Actual IMWI run time 4:23)

So… with transitions that brings me in around 11:15 or so, which would be phenomenal, but not Kona….  I would need to cut about 30 minutes off to be in that discussion and it will obviously have to happen on the run.  When I think back to Muncie I know I could have done an 1:46.  Times 2 that is 3:32 for the marathon.  Yikes… I would need a 3:40 to be in the Kona discussion.  This seems unreasonable, but like I said, I think my legs will hold up, it’s just the other things.  Or, I could be totally crazy.  I’m way over thinking this.

POST RACE THOUGHTS

I was a little ahead of myself with these predictions, but shit happens.  In all honesty, a 45 minute miss isn’t as far off as I think it would have been had I hit my swim time.  Right or wrong, that 1:20 swim put me in “play it safe mode” because, as the race progressed, a 12-hour goal seemed most “reasonable.”  A 1:10 swim raises the stakes and likely would have made me take a few more chances on the bike to get that number closer to 5:45.  That’s a reasonable 28 minutes right there and may have had me focused on sub 11:30 versus sub 12.  The run was a wild card, but in retrospect I believe I could have knocked off another 10 minutes if I had the 11:30 target in front of me.

It’s easy to sit here and say these things, but talking it through has been a major key in my progress.  I like to learn and keep pushing for higher levels.  In retrospect, I think I ran a smart race.  I could have pushed bigger gears on the bike and cut some time, but doing my first Ironman in sub-12 is a huge accomplishment.  I am very happy with that time, but far from satisfied.

Two Tweets Lead to a 10 Mile Swim

Funny how things happen.  I saw a tweet today from @blueseventy that said:   “10 mile swim in TN – why not?  We have an entry for the first person to tell us the winning time from last year #swimthesuck”

screen_shot_2011-11-25_at_medSwim The Suck is a 10 mile open water swim through Tennessee River Gorge and sorta sounds crazy and tempting at once.  But, there’s no way I could pull that one out of my ass, so I simply re-tweeted.

That’s when my coach @IMRBRUCE, jumped on board with this:  “@blueseventy 3:22:44!! I live in Nashville. Hook me up!”robbietweet

First of all, the winner swam 10 miles in 3:22?  Second of all, five minutes ago, my coach said BLUESEVENTY contacted him and he’s in the race.  And, oh, it’s this Saturday!

So, he’ll be doing a 10 mile swim on Saturday in Chattanooga, then driving to Alabama for Goosepond to do the swim portion of a 1/2 distance triathlon relay with us on Sunday.  Dude is gonna be straight up water-logged.  dsc_2978

Thanks God it's Swim, Bike, then Run

Whoever invented triathlons did me a huge favor, but if someone ever gets a bright idea to reverse the order to run, bike, swim, they will be on my short list of enemies.  I was rudely reminded of just how painful starting with the run can be.

Wasky ran over to the house (he was two miles in when we started) and we just took off in true Wasky fashion.*  I woke up exactly 21 minutes before he showed up and we galloped along at a 8:15 pace right from the start.  I knew it was a mistake, but I actually felt good . . . for a while.

We hit the greenway, then made an awesome discovery (which I have sworn to secrecy) that lifted my spirits in sort of a paradise meets the burning fires of hell sort of way.  A new training spot that will be a game changer.

Then more greenway and more 8:15 pace.  Six miles later we’re climbing out of Shelby Park and my legs start screaming like a raging bear that’s been jostled from hibernation.

A fierce run that is my longest since Ironman.  Up and down Riverside until we exchanged a very low five and went our own ways.  He ran close to 13 and I probably got in around 10.  Ten miles and I literally feel worse than I did after 140.6 in Madison.

The point here is that swimming first is a godsend.  Tired or not, it always wakes and warms me up in just the right ways and this whole thing reminds me to remind myself of the goals I set for the off season:

1.  Get to sleep earlier.  (Challenge of a lifetime)
2.  Wake up earlier.  (Mainly so I don’t go from the bed to the pool, bike, or road . . . oh and just so you know, this morning’s run started at 9 am)
3.  Strengthen and balance mind, body, and life.  (meditation, weights, writing, a social existence)
4.   Hit the pool hard.  (Now is the time to build swim confidence, which I really think translates into overall race confidence for me)
5.   Hit the trainer hard.  (Biking is my strength, but I am far from a strong biker in these races)
6.   Increase flexibility and pliability (long, strong muscles that recover faster).
7.   Increase (regain) running speed.   (explosive muscle training)

*  Wasky truly knows one speed, “all out.”  Not many know this, but he was so fired up at Ironman Louisville he swam the entire length of the upstream channel underwater.  And coach Robbie has acknowledged more than once that Wasky’s walk is a sub-8 pace.

Life Lessons in Training

Occasionally I will pop across the street to the convenience store and invariably get into a discussion with June, the woman behind the counter.  She deals with truckers all day, and has made it clear to me she would prefer a different lifestyle, but I find our short conversations fascinating because she has what I like to call Southern Intuition.

All I have to do is throw a little bait and she launches into diatribes that seem so much bigger than buying a Coke or Snickers.

Me:  What in the world is going on these days?

Her:  “Ya know… my mom, she’s dead now, but she always used to say… and this was 20 years ago…’this country is goin to the dogs’…. and you know what?  she was right… she was right… (whisper)…she… was… right.  Honestly, I always thought she was a little crazy… I was young… I didn’t get it… she was an RN… a registered nurse… and she’d say… (now June was whispering everything)… this country is going to hell in a hand basket…. I never understood it… but I do now… I should have listened…woulda been a lot easier… your parents always know.”

I love hearing her talk in that deep southern twang.  She always adds something to my day and while I’m not totally sure I agree with her about the country going to the dogs, I like her point.  Wisdom goes a long way and life can be a lot easier if we truly listen.

But why don’t we listen to people who have been there (including ourselves)?  Why do we run too much when our coaches or legs tell us not to?  Why do we overextend ourselves or eat like crap before a race?  Why don’t we sleep when we’re tired?  Why do we make out with sledge hammers?

I saw a tweet the other day from @wisemanphil that I think sums up life (and training) pretty well:
